Linda Alexander's LA Talk Radio Interview

Linda,

You handled this very well & clarifed to the co-hosts that Bob's testimony was reluctant, he did not call anyone a Communist, & it was entirely separate from the infamous McCarthy hearings in the early 50s. I got the impression from your book that he was asked to run for Governor of California (not President) before Ronald Reagan was asked but turned it down (as you explained in your book & reiterated in your interview) because of his failing health & the additional bad p… Continue

Thanks, Alejandra, for another interesting contribution. Bob wasn't even 25 when this article was published, so we must consider his youth and limited experience when he wrote it. Except for the death of his father a few years before, his life had gone very smoothly. He would have a lot of negative, as well as positive, experiences in the years that followed, which caused him to develop the humility for which he was so well-known. Continue

Bryan, TCM in Sydney must have a different schedule. Like Margaret Gaffney, I found the whole day dedicated to Harold Lloyd's movies (and to make it more aggravating, they have featured him at least once before on Summer Under the Stars.) Their VP of programming did tell me via email that they would feature Bob Taylor next year either as part of Summer Under the Stars of as a Star of the Month. I hope it will be as Star of the Month as they could show more of his movies. And it would be just my… Continue

TCM Recognition

I just received my copy of TCM's "Now Playing" magazine for August. Although I was told by their senior vice president of programming several months ago that Bob Taylor would not be included in "Summer Under the Stars" (for the 7th year in a row; nor to my knowledge, was he given the honor of being selected "Star of the Month" at any time during the 6 years I have been able to receive TCM), I was still shocked to see some of the names that were selected, including Sterling Hayden, Merle Oberon,… Continue

Hi Dianne, thanks for your comment. As one who has seen most if not all Robert Taylor's films from his early days to his last years I have managed to gather a substantial collection of his movies. "The Power and the Prize" remains one of my favourite films because it was not a period/western film but a modern day setting which allowed his fans to see him as he may have been away from the camera. The obvious happiness and contentment he had found with Ursula ,I believe, showed in the relaxed and open way he depicted the character. He similarly appeared to enjoy himself making "Many Rivers to Cross", also during the time he married her. My appreciation of him as an actor was in films "Waterloo Bridge","Johhny Eager","Rogue Cop" and "Above and Beyond" and that totally against type role in the "Last Hunt", the only one of his films I refuse to watch again. Have not seen the last couple he made (they were not shown out here) but would not have liked to have anyway as they were made purely for financial reasons and it supposedly showed. Loved "DDay 6th of June", Party Girl", "Valley of the Kings", and his many period films. I guess I became such a fan of his because his strength of character seemed to come through as such a nice guy. Seldom any negative press and his movies were always entertaining. Refused to do romantic roles when he thought he was "too old" unlike so many of todays stars. Have many favourite movies but Robert Taylor is definately my favourite actor. Like you I also loved "The Thorn Birds" which I watch from time to time. Having cable TV and being able to record to disc those films which have not been released on DVD has allowed me to have quite a collection of yesterdays films. Glad to be part of this group. Cheers, June

Dear Dianne! Thank you for your comment
The movie of Bob that I looked first was "Waterloo Bridge". I was a fan of Vivien Leigh. Bout see this movie, I became a fan of Bob than Vivian. Thereafter I looked after a lot of works of Bob. "Conspirator" is an unscreened movie in Japan. I bought it from U.S.A. I like Bob's intellectual and cleanliness of face.

Good to see someone else posting here. I have joined only last week and I hope to see the site more alive in the future. I thought it could be useful to start the movie-picture-gallery, just to know better, what we are talking about, since there is so much more to be discovered than "Ivanhoe" and "Quo vadis", isn't there?
