Who are we, really? Good question... I think he was a man named Spangler Arlington Brugh, and an actor and moviestar called Robert Taylor, the name MGM gave him. On screen, before the cameras he was Robert Taylor but on the set, with friends and rel…

Tim: What a thoughtful, insightful post! I have little to add except to say that I do believe you're right -- Bob Taylor attracts a certain type of persona. That's not all that unusual, though, if we think of our own lives & how we gravitate towards…

Please excuse me for taking so long to re-visit this most excellent site....which by the way is by far my most favorite site on the whole web! In my humble opinion Robert Taylor was both blessed and cursed with his extraordinary good looks. For, an…

The ability to play very different roles, and the ability to inhabit, to embody the roles with conviction, is what defines a good actor in my opinion. There are performers who play themselves in every movie whatever character they play no matter wha…

Tim, the earlier comment was from Alejandra but I'll put my "2 cents" in. ; > Bob Taylor had a dry, almost sarcastic sense of humor. So many thought he had no sense of humor at all, & I believe that misconception came from the fact that he was guar…

Thats very interesting Linda and goes to show once again just how difficult a job acting really is..although some undoubtedly find it much more difficult than others. Actors who constantly play themselves, their real selves on screen often don't hav…

I really enjoy Cary Grant's fine sense of humor. I love this guy, but when I say I love Cary Grant I mean I love Cary Grant playing Cary Grant, you know, I love "the character", the charming and debonaire gentleman. I always felt alone among classic…

History is a current vision of what truly happened, in any instance. Many revisionists, as you state, have their hands in telling the story the way they want it to be remembered. Few players in any of the facts of an instance long since past acted o…

Thanks for the information Linda...although I'm a little bit sorry now for asking the question! As you demonstrate so clearly in your book, Robert Taylor's behavior during those dark days in America was to all intents and purposes that of an honest…

About Me
I am forty seven years old, six feet tall and strongly built. I was an athlete in my youth and I still keep in some kind of shape by walking five or six miles a day. I am single, straight and I do not judge a person by their colour, race or sexuality, to me people are just people good or bad. At present I am engaged in fishing and other activities and life is pretty good at the moment.I value friendship greatly and I count myself really lucky to have such great friends here in my home town...after all Ireland is a very friendly place! To me Robert Taylor represents all that was good and dignified about the film industry in the forties and fifties and without a shadow of a doubt Robert Taylor was one of the greatest movie stars of them all...Take care, Tim.

I think there is some "Robert Taylor" in all of us.

The posts I have read on this great site says an awful lot not only about the loyalty of Robert Taylors fans, but also of the kind of people who already were fans, and those who are still discovering this great actor. The tone of respect in the comments I read seem to belong to a much earlier generation, and while obviously some are, others are not. I'm forty seven myself and I've been a fan for twenty years!....No!...I think the people who become Robert Taylor fans, have something in common wit… Continue

Cary Grants favorite poem!!

Like all move fans I love reading biographies and sometimes some pretty funny items come to light. For instance despite his movie image as the perfect English gentleman, Cary Grant came from a very rough part of London and his perfect manners and diction were acquired when he became an actor. However he never lost his liking for simple jokes and amusing rhymes and the following little "Limerick" was in fact his favorite piece of "poetry". When they gave me a box of toy soldiers I threw all the g… Continue

Always dignified

I have loved movies since I was a kid and among my favorites are old time action men like John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and so on. Although Robert Taylor's career coincided with the careers of these actors, for me at least he was not in the same class, in fact he was better. What has always struck me about Robert Taylor and the reason why I will always watch his movies is the dignity and sense of decency he brought to all his movie roles. He could never have played a convincing bad gu… Continue
